*Note that two numbers are given for the size of the box featured on this page.
The diagram above illustrates what these size numbers mean for various styles of flower-shaped boxes.
The larger size number provides a measurement for the outer edges of the box (line A),
while the smaller size number provides a measurement for the square shape in the center (line B).

Comments: | These party plates are fun to make and fun to use. If you fold them from large sheets of card stock or scrapbook paper, they will be big enough and sturdy enough to serve up many different types of snacks. They work especially well for popcorn or potato chips. Here I have used some double-sided paper, but this model would look just as nice if you used single-sided paper, since the liner covers any of the reverse side of the paper which would otherwise be revealed in the plate's interior. The paper I used was significantly thicker/stiffer than most origami paper, which made it a bit harder to get neat, precise folds. However, scoring some of the creases and utilizing a bone folder really helped. The heavier weight of the paper produced party plates which were strong enough to be practical, not just decorative, but you can also make these plates from lighter-weight paper, if you take the designer's suggestion to reinforce the bottom of the plate by inserting a square piece of cardboard under the liner. Just as a matter of serendipity, I discovered that the 15 cm (5.9 in) square piece of cardboard which comes in many packages of origami paper is just the right size for inserting in the base of a party plate made from 30.5 cm (12 in) scrapbook paper sheets. Although these party plates don't nest very well, they do flatten for storage, as shown in the photo at left, and they can be popped open again very easily at party time. |
